Your Hydrogen Valve Checklist

Sometimes choosing a valve can feel overwhelming, we have created a checklist for you to refer to when choosing your equipment:

1. Material Compatibility

  • Are components made from hydrogen-compatible metals (e.g., stainless steel, Hastelloy, Monel)?

  • Are elastomers/seals (e.g., PTFE, perfluoroelastomers) tested for hydrogen exposure?

  • Are materials resistant to hydrogen embrittlement?

2. Pressure & Temperature Ratings

  • Rated for system pressure (e.g., 350–700 bar)?

  • Operates reliably across full temperature range (including cryogenic)?

  • Suitable for liquid and/or compressed hydrogen?

3. Leak Tightness & Permeation

  • Helium or hydrogen leak tested?

  • Seals designed to prevent emissions?

4. Certification & Compliance

  • Meets standards (ISO 19880, ASME B31.12, API 6D/598/607)?

  • Third-party test data or certifications available?

5. Design Features

  • Valve type appropriate (e.g., ball, needle, diaphragm)?

  • Design minimises dead space and leakage?

  • Actuation suits system needs (manual/electric/pneumatic)?

6. Maintenance and  Lifecycle

  • Long service life, low maintenance?

  • Spares and service kits available?

  • Proven use in hydrogen applications?

7. Supplier Support

  • Experience in hydrogen systems (fuel cells, electrolysers, refuelling)?

  • Technical docs, CAD files, and support provided?
